She hasn’t been right all season since first getting hurt. Seems like she pushed to get out there and play for her new team. This only becomes a disaster if they don’t resign her. Otherwise it’s a win for them. She was one of the best players in the league before the injury

Phoenix sent Monique Akoa Makani, a 2027 first-round pick, and a 2028 second-round pick to the Los Angeles Sparks for Plum. At the time, the move was an aggressive attempt to add an elite offensive weapon to a team trying to change its season’s trajectory. Instead, Plum played only five games for Phoenix before her lower-leg injury ended her season. She will also miss the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup with Team USA.

That makes the upcoming offseason arguably the most important chapter of this entire saga. Plum is a free agent after the season. If Phoenix can re-sign her, the organization can still argue that it traded future assets for a foundational piece who simply lost time to injury. If Plum leaves, however, the equation changes dramatically. The Mercury could have surrendered a young guard and two future picks for five games of a star. That is why this offseason matters so much. The injury may have ended Plum’s 2026 season, but her decision for her future will determine how the trade is remembered.
