PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks continue to prove why they’re nicknamed the “Answerbacks,” coming back down 4-0 against the Chicago Cubs to win 5-4 thanks to Ryan Waldschmidt’s heroics once again.

It was a bit of a struggling night for Arizona, being shut out for seven innings, dealing with defensive miscues and losing Jordan Lawlar after he was hit by a pitch in the head. However, the eighth inning began a rally for the D-Backs.
The Snakes scored three runs in the inning, highlighted by timely knocks from Gabriel Moreno and Geraldo Perdomo. After Justin Martinez kept the Cubs scoreless in the top of the ninth inning, the Diamondbacks had just one more chance to either tie or take the lead.

Tim Tawa was able to work a walk, and Jose Fernandez stole second after coming in as a pinch runner. Ryan Waldschmidt then came in to hit for Jose Barrosa, who had entered for Lawlar the inning before. Facing a 2-1 count, Waldschmidt launched an 84.2 mph slider off Chicago reliever Jacob Webb to left field for the win and his third home run of the season.
The win now ties the series against the Chicago Cubs, but more importantly, it saved the D-Backs from back-to-back losses after a blowout loss Monday night. The walk-off also mirrored Waldschmidt’s second home run of the season, when he launched a game-winning blast against the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this month.

Arizona has built a reputation for never being out of a game, and Tuesday night was another example of exactly why the “Answerbacks” moniker has stuck.
The club looked down and out for much of the night, but the bats finally came alive when it mattered most. With the series now tied, the D-Backs will look to carry that momentum into the next game and finish the series on a high note.
