James Conner, who will be 31 years of age next season, was scheduled to carry a $9.8 million cap hit in 2026 with a $6.39 million base salary. The exact terms of the revised deal aren’t yet public, but the decision itself speaks loudly. That matters because Conner has been one of the Cardinals’ most consistent offensive forces.

Before last season’s brutal foot injury against the San Francisco 49ers, which limited him to just three games, Conner had played at least 13 games in four straight years. Even more telling, he produced back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons in 2023 and 2024 while often running behind an offensive line still searching for cohesion. Some running backs need clean lanes. That style is part of why Arizona didn’t tender Emari Demercado, leaving Trey Benson and Corey Kiner as the only other backs under contract from the 2025 depth chart. It also likely quiets draft speculation linking the team to Jeremiyah Love. The Notre Dame star RB was recently linked and rumored to be a piece for the Cardinals, though, with the new deal with Conner, that theory has most likely ended.
