PHOENIX — With much of the conversation centered on mainstay Merrill Kelly, another pitcher has joined the Arizona Diamondbacks who could prove to be an important bullpen addition.

According to Grupo Imagen’s Emmanuel Campa, the Diamondbacks have signed right-handed pitcher José Urquidy as they continue to bolster their pitching staff.

A World Series champion with the Houston Astros in 2022, Urquidy was sidelined for the 2024 season after undergoing a second Tommy John surgery. He returned in 2025 with the Detroit Tigers but struggled to recapture his previous form, posting a 7.71 ERA in just two major league appearances.

However, Urquidy has shown more promise in the Mexican Winter League, recording a 1.09 ERA and a 3-1 record across six games. While the level of competition differs from MLB, his performance in Mexico is an encouraging sign.

Pitching has been the Diamondbacks’ primary need this offseason. While Kelly’s return will dominate headlines, the team has already begun addressing that need with the signings of Urquidy and Michael Soroka. Still, there’s much more work left to do.

The pitching market is narrowing, and while the Diamondbacks retained their ace, the club must continue to pursue additional arms to remain competitive. With limited payroll flexibility, the front office will need to be strategic in how it acquires the talent the team needs.

For now, the Diamondbacks are steadily adding to their staff, and bringing in a pitcher who has experienced success at baseball’s highest level could prove to be a key move.
