GLENDALE – In the past five weeks, the Arizona Cardinals have had 19 drives to generate 50+ positive yards. Of those 19 drives only 12 of those equated to points, with nine of them being touchdowns. Arizona’s offense is below 50% of scoring a touchdown when they flip the field or better for themselves, which is the team’s biggest problem.

Petzing on what the offense needs to fix ahead of Texans matchup:

“We moved the ball, which is a positive. The points are the number one goal, and that’s always what we fall back on. Whether it’s redzone execution, whether we turn the ball over on the wrong read, anything like that is what we’re going back to clean those things up. Like we’ve said, if you can move the ball and generate some explosive plays, you’re putting yourself in position with points. We just need to do it at a more consistent level.”

Redzone execution is crucial, as three of the seven drives that the offense generated 50+ yards in the past five weeks ended because of turnover on downs inside the opponents 10-yard line. Two of the seven ended because of turnovers, and two were because of missed field goals by kicker Chad Ryland. There are plenty of fingers to point for the Cardinals offensive shortcomings, but not finishing drives inside the redzone is killer.

Arizona’s redzone percentage of scoring a touchdown is 56.86%, which is 20th in the NFL. The percentage becomes much more infuriating when one realizes that the Cardinals are tied for fourth for the most redzone trips per game in the NFL with 3.9. Petzing knows how to bring the time to the redzone, but hasn’t figured out the gameplan for his players to execute in those situations.
