GLENDALE – The Arizona Cardinals are riding a high like no other. After snapping their five-game losing streak against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football, the franchise has something it hasn’t had in months: Momentum. Newly appointed Cardinals starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett has revived the offense and give the fans hope heading into the second half of the season.

The Cardinals have lost eight straight games vs. the Seahawks, including on Thursday Night Football this season. Brissett has played against Seattle multiple times in his career, but is that experience enough to break the streak?

Brissett history vs. Seahawks
The 32-year-old career backup is 0-2 vs. the Seahawks in his career, with neither being memorial performances. In 2017, Brissett had his only game in Seattle. He threw for 55.2% completion for 157 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception in the 46-18 loss. The game marked Brissett’s fifth career start, and his first on the road.
The inexperience on how to handle opposing fans likely effected the young Brissett in his performance, leading to the blowout loss.

The next matchup between Brissett and the Seahawks came last year in Week 2. As a member of the New England Patriots, Brissett had eerily similar numbers to his first start vs. Seattle. On 55.6% completion, he threw for 149 passing yards and one touchdown. The main difference was the final score, as the Patriots would lose a close one in overtime, 23-20.

The biggest factor to take from the 2024 matchup was Brissett having face Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald’s defense. Last season, Brissett faced massive pressure against Macdonald’s front seven, being sacked three times. In Week 4, Murray was sacked five times vs. this Seattle front.
The key for Brissett is to stay in front of the sticks, avoid negative plays and giving the Seahawks momentum plays on defense. Despite saving the offense in his last three starts, Brissett has struggled to get the ball out quickly in the pockets. In the past two games, Brissett has been sacked 11 times, which could be blamed on the offensive line.
However, Brissett has an average time to throw time of 2.94 seconds, which the second-longest of any starter in the NFL, behind Chicago Bears Caleb Williams. Brissett has had stellar moment of evading pressure in his last three starts, but against this Seahawks pass rush, he’ll need to be smarter of when to try extend plays and when to get the ball out of play.

The Cardinals have put a lot of trust in their backup to get them back into playoff contention, by not being sellers at the NFL trade deadline. At 3-5 and nine more games to go, Brissett will need to lead the team in an uphill battle to make the franchise’s first postseason since 2021, which was the last time the team beat their NFC West division rival.
