PHOENIX – It was an alarming moment on Monday night when Arizona Diamondbacks closing pitcher Justin Martinez signaled for the trainers to remove him from the game as he dealt with elbow discomfort.

The Snakes had a 4-0 lead in the top of the ninth inning, Justin Martinez entered and looked outstanding until he felt he was unable to continue and proceeded to ask the D-Backs trainers to take him out of the game. Jeff Brigham came into replace him and ended up giving up four hits including a game tying home run. Martinez leaving this game almost cost them the series opener against Seattle, as Brigham gave up three earned runs without recording an out.

Martinez recently had a stint on the 15-day injured list back in early May after shoulder inflammation was a lingering issue. Arizona was elated for his return as their bullpen problems have plagued this ball club in 2025.

D-Backs head coach Torey Lovullo spoke on injuries:
Don’t want to speculate on how severe the injury is to Justin Martinez.
But the #Dbacks have a problem and MLB has an epidemic.
Shoulders, elbows, forearms, lats. No body part is safe. Nothing the Dbacks have done to rest has helped.

It seems like the D-Backs can’t catch a break when it comes to injuries. Right after newcomer and star pitcher Corbin Burnes found out he was going to undergo Tommy John Surgery. Martinez missing time would surely be a massive loss for this team that needs all the help they can get in the bullpen. Arizona will look to get an update as soon as possible as Justin Martinez is a key piece to this puzzle going forward, and the Snakes can’t afford to lose any more stars to injuries.
