MESA – The desert air crackles with unease. The Arizona Diamondbacks, fresh off a World Series appearance a couple of years ago, are stumbling through early spring training. Leads? Gone. Hits? Inconsistent. And those early pitching woes? Let’s just say they were a rude awakening.

The Arizona Diamondbacks came up short against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, losing 4-2 and winning only one game in their first five games to start the 2025 spring training campaign.

In three of the four losses suffered so far, the Diamondbacks held a lead at some point in the first three innings. In the lone game they did not hold a lead against the Rockies on Feb. 22, they were able to tie the game at three runs in the fifth inning before giving up six unanswered.

One game, they’re swinging like champs, the next, it’s like they forgot how to hold a bat. The offense has been inconsistent so far, with two games totaling double digit hits and two others finishing with four and five hits, respectively. The three runs scored against the Rockies were scored on a sacrifice fly by Ketel Marte, however an error by the Rockies outfield brought in additional runs. If it were not for the error, the Diamondbacks would have been blown out by an even worse margin.

Eugenio Suárez, Josh Naylor and Geraldo Perdomo sit at a batting average above .300, while others such as Ketel Marte, Corbin Carroll, and Jake McCarthy have struggled at the plate to start.

The pitching staff struggled to start, giving up 12 and nine runs to the Rockies in the first two games of spring training. However, expected members of the starting rotation have combined for three innings and just one earned run in that span. Corbin Burnes, Zac Gallen, and Joe Mantiply have looked good in their solo innings of work.

The bullpen will be key to finishing games and holding onto the leads the Diamondbacks are able to take.

With the season being in the early stages of spring training, the results of these games should be taken with a grain of salt. However, fans with high hopes for the Diamondbacks this season will hope for.
