On October 8th, San Diego State University announced that long-time Major League Baseball reliever Mark Melancon would be joining their staff as the pitching development coordinator.

I’m eager to help these players compete for a national championship and hopefully advance to the next level.”
Although the 39-year-old hasn’t officially announced his retirement from MLB, the fact that he hasn’t pitched since 2022 and is now focused on coaching suggests that the four-time All-Star may have closed the chapter on his playing career.
Melancon’s final season came with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022, after signing a two-year, $14 million deal in December 2021. In his final campaign, he posted a 4.66 ERA across 56 innings, compiling a 3-10 record while primarily serving as the D-backs’ closer.
Though Melancon did have one more year left on his contract, he missed the entire 2023 season due to a shoulder strain.
Drafted by the New York Yankees out of the University of Arizona in 2006, Melancon enjoyed a stellar career, with his best season coming in 2015 as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. That year, he finished eighth in Cy Young voting, boasting a 2.23 ERA over a career-high 76.2 innings in relief.
From 2011 to 2016, the right-hander was one of the most reliable bullpen arms in the league, never posting an ERA above 3.00 during that span.
