GLENDALE — Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon announced today that the Cardinals would be designating one of their rookies to return off injured reserve ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

Fifth-round offensive tackle Christian Jones (ankle) will now begin his 21-day window to practice before being activated for Arizona (1-3) after missing the minimum four weeks on injured reserve, which he was placed on ahead of the season.

Although Jones was pretty far down on the depth chart in the preseason, he could have a much larger role coming back. Starting right tackle Jonah Williams was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury after Week 1 and new starting right tackle Kelvin Beachum missed Week 3 with a hamstring injury. The Cardinals have elevated offensive tackles off the practice squad the last two weeks with Beachum dealing with his injury.

“He’s missed a lot of time, but I thought in preseason he did a good job of the role of a tackle,” Gannon said of Jones Wednesday. “He can pass pro, and he can generate movement in the run game. I liked where he was at. It was unfortunate, the injury, but he’s ready to go.”

Meanwhile, the Cardinals are not opening the practice windows for first-round rookie defensive tackle Darius Robinson (calf) and third-round cornerback Elijah Jones (heel), Gannon added.

Gannon did say that star tight end Trey McBride (concussion) and defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga (knee) would return to practice this week after missing Arizona’s 42-14 Week 4 blowout loss to the Washington Commanders.

These were the rest of the moves Arizona made today:

The Cardinals will release their first official Week 5 injury report later today.
