After giving up four earned runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings during the Diamondbacks’ 6-4 loss to the Phillies on Thursday, Jordan Montgomery had a unique perspective in his postgame comments.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Montgomery, who has struggled at home since joining the D-backs in the spring, pointed to the humidity at Chase Field as a potential factor. He likened the atmosphere to a jungle, remarking, “It’s like pitching in a jungle here sometimes. I don’t know how it gets so humid, but I swear it’s less humid in St. Louis during the summer than here.”

Montgomery’s numbers at Chase Field tell a story. In 10 starts this season, he’s posted an 8.14 ERA at home, compared to a 4.26 ERA on the road. He’s allowed at least three earned runs in eight of those 10 home starts. However, the Diamondbacks have managed a 6-4 record in those games. This stands in stark contrast to his 2022 season with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he recorded a 2.22 ERA at home. Last year, between St. Louis and Arlington, he posted a 3.61 ERA, indicating that home struggles are not typical for the veteran pitcher.
Notably, no other pitcher has raised concerns about the humidity levels at Chase Field.
