That wasn’t the most impressive part about this, however.
This high scoring affair was driven by two players in particular — Phoenix Mercury wing Kahleah Copper and Dallas Wings forward Natasha Howard.
Howard led all scorers with 36-points, while Copper followed just behind with 34 of her own. Each team was the engine for their respective teams on Wednesday, and their efforts were good enough for a combined 70-points.
This marks the fourth time in WNBA history and the first time since 2019 where two players scored 30-plus points on 70% or better from the field in a single game.
Tonight's Phoenix/Dallas game marks just the 4th time in WNBA history and 1st since 2019 two players have 30+ PTS on 70% or better shooting in the same game…
Kahleah Copper: 34 PTS / 14-20 FG (70.0%)
Natasha Howard: 36 PTS / 11-15 FG (73.3%)https://t.co/kLmBK7BDm0— Across the Timeline (@WBBTimeline) July 4, 2024
“They’ve got a tough matchup with Howard at the four,” said Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts. “She shot 17 free throws, that always helps. And [Kahleah] getting another 30-points, I think she leads the league in that, which is awesome.”
The battle between Copper and Howard was surely must-see television on the eve of the Fourth of July.
