The Diamondbacks will go with an opener, with Scott McGough set to start the game. Henry will eat up the bulk of the innings behind McGough, ideally to pitch the team through at least the fifth inning. Arizona’s bullpen is reeling from a rough start from Ryne Nelson and a disastrous appearance from Allen on Saturday.
Henry has made his previous appearances with Arizona as a starting pitcher. In six starts this season, he’s 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA/4.65 FIP. While he’s setting career highs in strikeout (18.5%) and walk (8.5%) rates, opposing hitters have had little issue squaring up the left-hander. They’re hitting .302 while slugging .517 against Henry.
Allen, 27, had been a decent innings eater for the Diamondbacks bullpen, with a 3.67 ERA/3.84 FIP in 27 innings. However, he was slammed for six runs plus the two inherited baserunners and only got three outs in the team’s 13-1 loss to the Padres. With the bullpen under a lot of stress due to poor performances from the starting rotation, that type of outing is problematic.
Arizona has seven days to trade, release, or outright Allen to the minors.
