Scott McGough named Sunday’s starter vs. Padres

Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Scott McGough pitches against the Seattle Mariners.

Following the Diamondbacks 13-1 loss to the San Diego Padres, manager Torey Lovullo announced to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic that Scott McGough will start the series finale on Sunday.

McGough threw a clean seventh inning in his return from Triple-A Reno on Saturday. Starting on Sunday will mark back-to-back appearances for the right-hander, which will impact the length of his “start”. Piecoro also hinted at a possible roster move to help provide coverage for the bullpen.

It will be interesting to see how they piece together the rest of the game, assuming McGough goes no more than two innings. A bulk relief pitcher could be on the table, as they could call up left-hander Tommy Henry to eat up innings. Luis Frias, Brandon Hughes, and Joe Jacques are not eligible to be recalled to the big league roster unless it’s to replace a pitcher going on the injured list. Cristian Mena went ahead with his start for Triple-A Reno, which no longer makes him a candidate to pitch in this game.

For the game, the team will be without the services of Logan Allen and Thyago Vieira. Barring a Henry call-up, Bryce Jarvis serves as a potential length guy who could push into the 40-pitch range. The rest of the bullpen is composed of pitchers ideally suited to go one to two innings.
