Blaze Alexander was not initially expected to secure a spot on the Diamondbacks’ Opening Day roster this season. Yet, here he is, having started six games already, thanks to an impressive performance in spring camp, coupled with Geraldo Perdomo’s placement on the injured list.

Although there have been some hiccups along the way, including a couple of errors, it is worth noting that Alexander, a former 11th-round pick for the Diamondbacks, boasts a .313 batting average through his first 11 major league games.

Even better, manager Torey Lovullo recognizes the potential Blaze possesses.

Following an error during a series where the D-backs were swept by Atlanta, Lovullo delivered a heartfelt message to the young shortstop. While acknowledging that Blaze has work to do, especially considering the impact of his early-season errors, Lovullo offered unwavering support:

“‘I love you, man, and I love your game. And I’m here with you, and I’m riding with you the whole way. But you got some work to do,’ and he understands that.”

Alexander has made three errors in 11 chances so far, technically ranking him as the league’s least effective fielder in terms of dWAR.

This stands in stark contrast to last season in the minor leagues, where he made six errors in 245 chances.
