In total, 44 players were selected, with one representative from each of the 32 teams in the league.

Additionally, there were 12 players selected by the fans to fill out the available spots, regardless of the team.

The Vancouver Canucks will have five members heading to Toronto while the Maple Leafs are going to have four participate during the festivities in the host city.

Favoritism is a key factor, no matter if there is someone else doing better. The name of each player has weight and substance that can propel them to being selected.

While some teams will have more players heading to the NHL spectacle in February, there are five others around the league that were shockingly snubbed despite their strong seasons.

RW Mikko Rantanen | Colorado Avalanche

Standing out from the rest, Mikko Rantanen is the biggest exclusion from the All-Star game, being a top-20 player in multiple categories in the NHL. In 44 games, Rantanen has scored 22 (11th-best) goals and 33 assists (15th) for 55 points (9th). The fact that Rantanen misses out with these numbers is complete blasphemy. Avalanche teammates Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon and Alexander Georgiev (will be mentioned later) are all making the trip to Ontario, but Rantanen isn’t even appearing, though he is on-pace to crack 105+ points this season.

LW Jake Guentzel | Pittsburgh Penguins

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will alway be included as the representative as long as he continues his Hall of Fame career. But there is another member of Pittsburgh who doesn’t get enough recognition that he deserves. Jake Guentzel lines up alongside Crosby and while some may say he benefits from playing with one of the best centers in NHL history, that doesn’t tell the whole story. Guentzel has 19 goals, 27 assists and 46 points through 41 games this season, leads in front of Crosby (44) for the Penguins. If you want to base selections on stats and impact, Guentzel deserves to go to the event, but will be absent.

LW Jesper Bratt | New Jersey Devils

Even though the New Jersey Devils were the most overhyped team coming into the season, Jesper Bratt has quietly had a solid year so far. Bratt has compiled 16 goals, 30 assists in 40 games. New Jersey has dealt with multiple injuries to stars Dougie Hamilton, Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier and Timo Meier, but Bratt continues to be one of the more underrated forwards in the NHL. His speed, deceptiveness and skill can go under the radar, but in front of a big stage like the All-Star Game, he could have showcased what he has in his locker to hockey fans who don’t watch New Jersey on a normal basis.

D Noah Dobson | New York Islanders

Makar and Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes have been the two best offensive defensemen in the league this season, no question. But not far behind both, Noah Dobson has quietly had a breakout season, emerging as one of the future NHL stars from the backend for years to come. Collecting 37 assists, 43 points and a plus/minus rating of +17, Dobson ranks third amongst defensemen, behind Makar and Quinn Hughes. Mathew Barzal will be the face of the Islanders Feb. 1-3, but since fans complain about the defensive play in past All-Star Games, Dobson was a clear addition that has been forgotten.

G Connor Ingram | Arizona Coyotes

Georgiev was one of the goaltenders that was chosen by the fans, but there were multiple options in the position that received less selection that have had a better season than him. Out of the other snubs, Connor Ingram is not a household name, but like Dobson, he too is another player that is impacted by the market in which he plays in. Posting a 15-8-0 record, 2.51 goals-against-average and a .919 save percentage, Ingram has been a top-10 goalie this season that gets minimal love from people outside of Arizona because he plays in Arizona. Currently, he leads the league in shutouts with five.

There were other honorable mentions for netminders like Vegas Golden Knights’ Adin Hill (currently on Injured Reserve) and Juuse Saros, but for Ingram to play this well for the Coyotes, he deserved recognition by receiving one of the highest honors in the NHL: becoming an All-Star.
