He turned 58 years old, today. Majerle is synonymous with the Phoenix Suns because he played for the franchise during arguably their best run. Majerle was drafted 14th overall in the 1988 NBA Draft by Phoenix. The man known as “Thunder Dan” played for Phoenix from the 1988-89 season through the 1994-95 season, then came back for his last season in the 2001-02 season.

The Phoenix Suns were really good during the years when Majerle played on the team. The Suns made it to two western conference finals and a NBA finals in Majerle’s first seven seasons. They did not win a championship during that time but they were true championship contenders for most of that run. Lots of teams in the NBA have never had a run of success like that.

Thunder Dan was a huge part of that success as he was a three-time all-star and selected to two all-defensive teams while playing in the valley. Majerle averaged 13.5 points per game while shooting 44% from the field and 36% from three, while playing for the Suns.

Dan Majerle is really submerged in Phoenix and it not just from his playing days. He also had a great run as the head basketball coach at Grand Canyon University and his Majerle’s restaurants are among the best in town. Happy birthday to one of Phoenix’s adopted sons Thunder Dan Majerle.
