Camp T full Saturday scrimmage breakdown, analysis

© Rob Schumacher/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK

Yesterday, the Sun Devils had their first full-on scrimmage of fall camp up at Camp Tontozona. I logged all of the series and highlighted the big plays.

Check out my recap video from yesterday:

Read about Drew Pyne’s hamstring injury and Montana Warren’s shoulder injury:

ASU QB Drew Pyne, DB Montana Warren suffer injuries at Camp T

Here are my notes from each series. (Keep in mind that coach KennyDillingham wanted to play mostly second and third string players to get them live-game reps)

Series-by-series breakdown (highlighting who is QB and key moments)

Two-yard drill (appeared to be best-of-five)

  • Bourguet first at QB with first team
    • Defense wins. No TDs for offense, as there were two drops in the end zone. Highlight play was a PBU by Jordan Clark when Bourguet was trying to find Conyers over the middle
  • Pyne second at QB with second team
    • Two TDs by Pyne (receptions by WR Gio Sanders and RB George Hart III), but defense wins with three stops

Team series (full 11-on-11 from own 20)

  • Trenton Bourguet first at QB in team series
    • Goes three and out. Jordan Clark had another good pass break up
    • Only full first-team 11-on-11
  • Pyne second at QB in team series
    • 3 first downs, highlighted by catches by Gio Sanders
    • Pyne injured sliding. Walking off under own power. Ended up being a small hamstring tear according to Dillingham.
    • Bourguet back in at other 40-yard line on second down. Can’t make most of chance and come up with empty trip and 0 yards under Bourguet
  • Jaden Rashada playing with mostly first team next possession
    • Looks comfortable
    • Driving down field, then Torrence had a near INT. Found Conyers next play for big gain. Had good yardage to Omeire too. Clayton Smith sack.
    • 37-yard FG by Longhetto good for first score of day for offense (yardage wrong in tweet)

  • After special teams drills, Rashada back in at QB with mostly second and third team
    • Kyson Brown rips off long run to start
    • Good defense prevents score (in FG range but didn’t kick)
  • Rashada another set at QB with mostly the 2nd and 3rd team
    • He picked up one first down, but a sack by Anthony Ruiz on third down on the next set of downs gives ball away.
  • Bourguet back in at QB with mostly second and third team
    • Big connection right away to Omeire then another on next play to Andre Johnson to get past the 50
    • Next set of downs: PBU by Roman Rashada, Bourguet scrambles on 4th down but doesn’t get enough. Turnover
  • Rashada in next series
    • Drives down the field, looks comfortable. He throws the first TD of the day to Shawn Charles on around a 42-yard deep ball that was called back. However, he finds Charles again on next play for a TD from about 47 yards out

  • Rashada in again
    • Drives down field but unable to convert on 4th down

Defense wins the day easily. A lot of sloppy play and penalties throughout the day, but wouldn’t expect otherwise in first scrimmage.

Standouts (touched on in video)

  1. After Drew Pyne went down with an injury, Jaden Rashada took advantage of a larger role. Looked poised and led his team to a 37-yard FG, including a good connection to Conyers. Dillingham thought he grew and gave him lots of reps to learn how to play in a game situation. Hard to tell where QB situation stands depending on Pyne’s injury severity
  2. Jordan Clark had good PBU in 2-yard drill and deflected third down pass on first full team
  3. Gio Sanders getting second team reps in the slot but making most of opportunities (Melquan Stovall and him rotated a little bit, but Stovall got most of first team reps). TD on 2-yard drill with second team. Good catch and runs in his first team drill
