WATCH: Kenny Dillingham Recaps Camp T Scrimmage, Talks Drew Pyne Injury and More

The Arizona State football team just wrapped up its third and final practice at Camp Tontozona this morning, and coach Kenny Dillingham recapped it afterwards.

For today’s practice, Sun Devils held a scrimmage in front of what appeared to be a couple thousand fans. Dillingham talked about the “unbelievable” experience his players had and more during their time up just east of Payson.

Unfortunately, Notre Dame transfer QB Drew Pyne, who is fighting  for the starting spot, went down with a hamstring injury during the scrimmage, which Dillingham also touched on.

Freshman QB Jaden Rashada really stepped up today with Pyne out and handled most of the offensive series. Dillingham played mostly second and third stringers today to give them live game action reps.

Key Takeaways from Dillingham:

  • Overall thought today was sloppy and there too many penalties. But, he felt it was good to practice and get better, especially in a real live scrimmage

  • Good learning experience to know that this is what a game looks like

  • Drew Pyne is “okay.” He has a minor hamstring tear. They’ll find out the severity of it, but he’s in good spirits

  • Unbelievable fan support today

  • All the players learned the fight song and sang it to the fans. The players felt connected to the fan base and wanted to give back to the fans

  • Spent the majority of practice using the second and third stringers. First team has all been in this situation of a live game, but wanted to put the second and third teamers in that situation

  • “Unbelievable” time at Camp T. Players and coaches jumping in river. Learned all about history of teams

  • Thinks his guys were “shocked by how much joy they had out here”

  • Thinks team is growing together, and events like this help even more. But it will take years and years of work to build up the program to where he wants it

  • Wants to continue the support they had today through the good and the bad

    • “I think we will because we have a lot of passionate fans” that care about this and see this team is trying to recreate the traditions of old

  • Freshman DB Montana Warren out 6-8 weeks with shoulder injury

  • On Rashada: “I thought he grew. From the beginning of the scrimmage to the end of the scrimmage, there was a drastic improvement in his game ,just got more comfortable. And that’s why we got him a lot of reps is because the only way to get good at football is to play football.”
