After the incident that took place with Britney Griner a couple of years ago at the airport, the Phoenix Mercury is planning to change how the team travels to road games.

According to head coach Vanessa Nygaard, the Mercury is going to take different precautions when it comes to keeping her team safe.

“We will ensure that our players and our organization and our staff are safe,” coach Vanessa Nygaard said before the Mercury’s Sunday road game. “We will be making adjustments that maybe should have happened before but right now we’re going to prioritize the safety of our players and we’ve seen that the organization has supported us.”

Another reason why this is happening is that Griner was approached by a YouTuber named Alex Stein who yelled at her about the “Merchant of Death.”

The Mercury issued a statement following what took place during the incident on Saturday morning.

The WNBA issued a statement as well describing that Griner has been assigned security to travel with her during road games this season.

“Prior to the season, the WNBA worked together with the Phoenix Mercury and BG’s team to ensure her safety during her travel, which included charter flights for WNBA games and assigned security personnel with her at all times,” the WNBA said. “We remain steadfastly committed to the highest standards of security for players.”

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert says Brittney Griner is doing Well

It’s good on the WNBA for enhancing these rules and safety for Griner, unfortunately, there will be hecklers all over the place waiting for their opportunity which means that we still have a ways to go.
