GLENDALE – The biggest question heading into Week 1 season opener vs. the Los Angeles Chargers for the Arizona Cardinals is the status of rookie running back Jeremiyah Love. Head coach Mike LaFleur spoke to the media on Friday and stated that the rookie will be a game-time decision for Sunday. However, the first-year head coach dived deeper into his philosophy of splitting running back reps.
LaFleur sees running backs as “limited” because they can’t play in 100% of snaps because of the physical burden. There will be plenty of reps for all halfbacks on the roster, especially with Love dealing with an ankle injury.

LaFleur breaks down approach to running back reps:
In his lone preseason game vs. the Las Vegas Raiders, Love had 11 carries for 58 yards and three catches for 15 yards. He only appeared in the three first-half drives for the Cardinals, but his impact was undeniable for those watching. The injury derails that type of production and game reps for now, but Love is a playmaker on the field and putting the ball in his hands lead to more good than bad.
The current RB1 on the depth chart Tyler Allgeier only had four carries in that game, but his role will surely increase in regular season snaps. Last year’s starter Bam Knight remains as a viable third down back for LaFleur. Then, James Conner is still recovering from his foot injury last year and a possibly return will happen sooner rather than later.

The running back room is full, and LaFleur will look to spread the wealth with the talent on the roster. Add in his ankle sprain, and Love’s production in Week 1 and early in the year will likely not meet the expectations of the third overall pick.
