GLENDALE – From undrafted to the Phoenix Suns history books, guard Collin Gillespie is immortalize in franchise history. On Thursday vs. the Charlotte Hornets in the 2nd quarter, the 26-year-old made his 227th 3-pointer of the season, setting the single-season record in Suns history. Gillespie passes Quentin Richardson, who has held the record for over 20 years. However, the third-year guard remains all alone at the top.

Gillespie breaks the record:

When the record became a reality after a hot streak in the middle of March, Gillespie started to hit a rough patch in the final week of the month. In his past four games, he shot 27.9% from the field and 21.9% from beyond the arc on eight attempts. The cold streak included a stretch where Gillespie missed 20 straight shots.

That rough shooting ended in Charlotte on Thursday, knocking down two of his first four shots from the perimeter to get into the record books.

The moment is much more special in the context of Gillespie’s career up to this point. After a successful college career, the 6’1 guard goes undrafted in the 2023 NBA draft and is signed to a two-way contract to the Denver Nuggets. He gets a small opportunity under Mike Budenholzer in his second year, playing only 14 minutes per game in 33 appearances.

It wasn’t until head coach Jordan Ott was brought in that Gillespie was given his first real opportunity to start. The young guard has started 57 games out of his 76 appearances in a career-high 28.9 minutes per game. Gillespie is setting career milestones in points (13.1), assists (4.8), rebounds (3.0) and steals (1.3) , while leading Phoenix in three-point shooting at 40.9%.

Gillespie has earned himself a big payday at the end of this season as a free agent and proves himself as a massive piece of the franchise’s future by being a part of its record books.
