Team USA’s 2-1 overtime win against Canada at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games delivered the program’s third Olympic gold medal — 46 years to the day after its victory over the Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Olympics in New York.

At the center is Auston Matthews, who grew up in Scottsdale and became the face of Arizona’s hockey rise. His development through local youth programs helped reshape perceptions of where elite American hockey players can come from.

Tage Thompson, born in Phoenix, and brothers Brady Tkachuk and Matthew Tkachuk were also born in the Valley. Clayton Keller holds a different — but still significant — tie to Arizona, having played for the Arizona Coyotes and becoming a franchise cornerstone during the club’s time in the desert.

The Valley connections — five Arizona-linked players on a gold medal roster — reflect the long-term strategic impact of hockey’s footprint in the Southwest.

Winning Olympic gold against powerhouse Canada serves as validation for both the players and the region that helped shape them. A new generation of American stars, including those with Arizona roots, has delivered another iconic moment for men’s hockey — one made possible in part by the sport’s increasingly diverse geographic pipeline.

Whether it was growing up in the state, being born there or wearing “Arizona” across their chest, the desert has become part of America’s hockey blueprint.
