Jonathan Gannon status with Cardinals is uncertain in 2026

GLENDALE – The Arizona Cardinals have a fascinating decision to make as a franchise when it comes to head coach Jonathan Gannon. A loss on Sunday makes him the head coach of an Arizona team with the most losses in a single season, while his career coaching record is the worst by a two-year plus head coach for the franchise in over 70 years.

Despite all those numbers against him, Gannon still has a strong case to stay. CBS Sports NFL analyst Jonathan Jones wrote about the third-year Cardinals coach chances to see a fourth season.

Jones on Cardinals perspective on Gannon:

“It is not for certain the Cardinals will retain third-year coach Jonathan Gannon, though many have said to me that Michael Bidwill may be unwilling to pay three fired coaches at one time, as well as the fact the offense has been playing “with a practice squad” as one source put it. Gannon has handled himself well in press conferences that aren’t easy. There are big decisions Arizona has to make about its future, including at QB with Kyler Murray.”

The decision might come to be a money problem for owner Michael Bidwill. Firing another coach prematurely and having to pay someone to not coach your team is a humiliating idea for Bidwill. Regardless of Gannon’s salary, sympathy and grace could be given to the 42-year-old because of the injuries surrounding the team.

Jones’ source called it a “practice squad,” which is generous to say the least. The Cardinals have had the most games missed by starters due to injuries in the NFL this season, with the number well over 300 collective games. Whether the injuries are the sole reason why the offense has failed to score over 30+ points all season or are about to allow the most points in franchise history is up to the eye of the beholder.

2025 will be the fourth straight season Arizona will miss the playoffs, and the eighth time in nine years. The fans are in starvation for success, but the firing of Gannon could suppress their appetite. The Valley is boiling with anger in the incompetence of this season to fall so far from the graces of hope that 2024 gave.

The decision will be in Bidwill’s hands on Monday morning on whether to keep Gannon. One would hope any decision keeping Gannon is a football decision and not a way to save money for the billionaire owner.
