MLB Network insider Mark Feinsand reports that Arizona is one of two teams aggressively pursuing All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman. The report highlights the club’s ambition to make another postseason run, as Bregman is a proven, championship-level piece who could bolster the middle of the Diamondbacks’ lineup.

However, another report suggests the situation is far more complicated.

According to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro, there is no realistic scenario in which the Diamondbacks sign the veteran third baseman while also keeping second baseman Ketel Marte, one of the franchise’s most established stars. With Marte entering the final guaranteed years of his contract, both players would carry significant financial commitments.

The clock is ticking on whether Marte could be traded this offseason, as general manager Mike Hazen continues to prioritize other areas instead of waiting around for a deal that meets the organization’s value. What happens with either player appears closely tied to the other’s future.

If Marte is not dealt, the likelihood of Bregman coming to the desert diminishes. On the other hand, if the Diamondbacks move Marte, the possibility of signing Bregman increases.

The contrast between the two reports underscores the tension facing Arizona’s front office this offseason: a commitment to continuity versus the difficult choice of exploring alternative paths and potentially parting with a core star.

This decision is not about star power. Both players bring proven production and leadership. In a challenging National League West, the ideal scenario would be to see both play for the Diamondbacks.

Ultimately, Arizona must decide what it prioritizes most before the season begins.
