Skattebo went down with 8:07 remaining in the second quarter while attempting to catch a pass from quarterback Jaxson Dart when he landed awkwardly. He was carted off the field as emotional teammates surrounded him.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the team has ruled that he suffered a dislocated ankle and is undergoing further evaluation.

The injury occurred at a crucial moment, as Skattebo was starting to emerge as a true leader on offense. In recent weeks, he had become a standout among his rookie class and was starting to build a connection with Dart.

This season, the rookie running back has carried the ball 98 times for 398 yards and scored five touchdowns. Skattebo also has had 23 receptions for 189 yards and one touchdown.

Skattebo’s injury now raises questions about who will take over his role and how the offense will adjust. He has been one of the team’s most important players offensively, recording a three-touchdown performance on Oct. 9, for a 34-17 win against the Eagles.

Replacing Skattebo will be tough.

For fans in both New York and Arizona, it’s a gut-wrenching halt to what looked like a promising rookie season.

The Giants and fans are now left to wait to learn whether Skattebo’s rookie season has come to an end.
