Three major Suns storylines to watch closely this season

PHOENIX SUNS — After an offseason of significant change, the Phoenix Suns are gearing up for yet another season.

Old faces out and new faces in, expectations in The Valley are drastically different from what they have been in the Mat Ishbia era. Instead of an all-in approach to contend for a championship, the Phoenix is focused on a foundational reset around Devin Booker.

Yes, they had to get rid of Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal in the process, but many would argue this Suns team has a more positive outlook than in years past.

With that being said, on the eve of Phoenix’s opening night against the Sacramento Kings, let’s dive into three major storylines to watch this season.

Devin Booker Due For a Scoring Outburst?

With Durant and Beal, both prominent, high-volume scorers, gone, the Suns’ all-time franchise leading scorer is going to have even more opportunity to score the ball.

When you take into account that he’s also going to be running point guard, Booker’s usage rate is likely to shoot up (cough, cough, fantasy basketball players). In games played without Durant and Beal last season, Booker averaged 20.1 FGA and 27.3 PTS per game.

Don’t be surprised if Booker finds himself near a scoring title this season.

Jordan Otts’ First Suns Season

Coming out of his introductory press conference, the word I’d use (and used) to describe first-year head coach Jordan Ott is phlegmatic. Which means, according to the Oxford Dictionary, having an unemotional and stolidly calm disposition.

Watch the post-practice media availabilities. Watch how he takes a second to think up an articulate answer to even the least complicated questions. If Ott translates that mindset throughout every aspect of life, then Phoenix may have finally found a head coach worth keeping.

Ott has a distinguished coaching style that fits perfectly with the type of players the Suns have around him, minus a well-rounded ball handling playmaker.

I wouldn’t surprised if Phoenix shocks people, and if Ott is the reason it does.

The New Culture

Ott has done a tremendous job of building a new culture, as well. That’s easy when you have guys like Booker and Dillon Brooks. Booker with his underrated leadership and Brooks with… well, you know what.

It’s infectious up and down the roster, and guys like Collin Gillespie and Ryan Dunn are immediately taking heed what the veterans are all about.

Ott spoke at length about cultivating a new culture ahead of his first season.

“The culture, the identity, that’s a result of the day-to-day habits that we all do,” Ott said. “I don’t think you think about the end of what it looks like or what it feels like. You just know, when you’re in it, you feel a certain type of way.”

I have no doubt in my mind that the 2025-26 Phoenix Suns will be a fan-favorite day in and day out.
