GLENDALE – The Arizona Cardinals have begun trimming their roster to the mandatory 53 player limit by releasing 12 players on Monday. The marquee name of the list is former 2023 fifth-round pick QB Clayton Tune. Since entering the league, Tune has been a backup with only one career start against the Cleveland Browns, throwing 11-of-20 for 58 passing yards and two interceptions.

All 12 players cut by Cardinals on Monday:

Tune played in every preseason game this year and had a disappointing showing. In three games, the 26-year-old went 30-of-49 for 186 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. Entering year three, Tune wasn’t showing the signs one would expect from a developing quarterback.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Clayton Tune (15) runs into the end zone for a touchdown Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024, before a preseason game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Arizona Cardinals at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

His time in Arizona likely isn’t done, as the team will likely sign Tune to the practice squad to have an extra quarterback in the building. The worst case scenario would be having to re-sign Tune due to an injury to starting quarterback Kyler Murray and needing a backup.
