PHOENIX — Alyssa Thomas has had a career season in her first year with the Phoenix Mercury, continuing to strengthen her case as an MVP candidate this weekend.

In Mercury’s win against the Washington Mystics, Thomas nearly had her second triple-double this season with 27 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Thomas is the only player in WNBA history to have recorded these stats not only once, but twice.
Thomas made WNBA history Sunday afternoon with her sixth career game recording at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists — surpassing Candace Parker. The NBA even noticed the monumental achievement on its X (formerly Twitter) account.

While the win against the Mystics has added to her case, Thomas credits her teammates for helping her this season.
“None of it is possible without them,” she said when asked by Jesse Morrison. “They’re the ones that get me these assists. I feel a sense of freedom. It’s a new start for me, and I’m just having a lot of fun.”

Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts said he loves coaching the All-Star. He said Thomas was a “winner.”
“I don’t think people understand how good she is or want to know,” Tibbetts said to Morrison. “…You have to win at a high level to be in the conversation for MVP. There’s a couple players that are up in my mind for that and I think she’s one of them.”

With plenty of time left in the season, Thomas can only continue to add to her campaign and potentially be in MVP talks at the end of the year.
