Hot Mercury team visit Connecticut Sun seeking ninth win

UNCASVILLE — The Phoenix Mercury are on a hot streak and visit the Connecticut Sun to secure their ninth win of the season on Wednesday.

The Mercury have won the first game of their four-game road trip after defeating the Las Vegas Aces, 76-70, on Sunday, June 15. After a slow start in the opening minutes, Phoenix quickly turned the tide in their favor and took a 43-39 lead into the half.

Phoenix extended their lead to 11 points and improved significantly on shooting beyond the arc as the game progressed. The Aces did their best to cut the deficit — at one point down by four — but the Mercury held their lead until the end.

Satou Sabally scored 22 points with nine rebounds and three assists for the Mercury in the win

The Mercury are now 8-4 and continue to hold second place in the Western Conference.

The Sun comes off a loss against the Indiana Fever, 88-71, in a physical matchup on Tuesday, June 17. Connecticut and Indiana started off the game at a similar pace, but the Fever would soon take a 47-39 into the half.

Connecticut trailed by seven with 8:15 left in the third quarter and didn’t score another field goal until five minutes later, by which point they were down by 12. In the final 47 seconds of the game, the Sun’s Jacy Sheldon and the Fever’s Sophie Cunningham got into a physical altercation after a hard foul.

Cunninghan and Sheldon, along with the Sun’s Lindsay Allen, were ejected following the shoving match.

Tina Charles led scoring for the Sun with 20 points, four rebounds and three assists.

The Sun are now 2-9 and are sixth in the Eastern Conference.
