Mercury aims to regroup at home against Valkyries

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Mercury looks to regroup as it comes home to face the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday, June 5.

The Mercury suffered its biggest defeat of the season against the Minnesota Lynx on June 3, 88-65. While Phoenix took an early lead after the first quarter, Minnesota quickly responded and outscored the Mercury the rest of the game.

Phoenix struggled offensively, shooting 38.4% from the field and 16.7% from beyond the arc as a team. The Lynx shot 58.6% from the field and 48.0% from three as a team in the win.

Phoenix is now 5-3 and continues to hold second place in the Western Conference.

The Valkyries come to the desert looking for its first win after a three-game skid, its last against the Minnesota Lynx on June 1, 86-75. Lynx’s Courtney Williams’ third-quarter three-pointer with three minutes left was the decisive shot that kept Minnesota in the lead for the rest of the game.

Golden State’s Veronica Burton scored 21 points and shot for 63.7%. Kate Martin had 14 points and shot for 50.0%.

Golden State is now 2-4 and fifth in the Western Conference.

The first time the Mercury and the Valkyries met was during the preseason on May 11, where the Valkyries took an 84-79 win.

Phoenix and Golden State go head to head on June 5 at 7 p.m.
