PHOENIX — Phoenix Rising’s USL Jägermeister Cup debut ends in a loss with tense moments, falling to San Antonio FC, 1-0.

The match started slow, with a single yellow card to San Antonio’s Mitchell Taintor in the 16th minute. Phoenix tried its best to get something going but to no avail. At times during the match, both clubs exchanged heated words and elbows but no cards were given. Phoenix’s luck would then turn south just before the end of the first half.

In the 43rd minute, Phoenix’s Pape Mar Boye suffered an apparent injury and had to be substituted for Harvey Neville. He wouldn’t return for the rest of the game, and Phoenix had to continue down a defender.

San Antonio would break the scoreless tie with a goal from Juan Agudelo, his first of the season. Phoenix’s Ihsan Sacko would then answer back with a goal of his own, but then was ruled he was offsides. Phoenix tried its best to put pressure in the final minutes of the second half but would ultimately fall, suffering its first loss in the Jägermeister Cup.

Phoenix has a week to shake this loss off as its next game will be on the road against Colorado Spring Switchbacks FC on May 3, at 6 p.m.
