The Phoenix Rising kick off their season at home against FC Tulsa on March 8 under new head coach Pa-Modou Kah, who comes over from Major League Soccer club Charlotte FC where he served as assistant coach.

Kah first began his coaching career after announcing his retirement from playing and moving to a player coach role for Whitecaps FC 2, a developmental team within the Vancouver Whitecaps organization.

Kah became an assistant for FC Cincinnati’s debut season in MLS after being promoted from the lower division United Soccer League. The team had a rough season, finishing last in the league and setting a record for most goals given up in a season at 75.

Canadian Premiere League team Pacific FC then hired Kah to be their head coach starting in 2020. The team improved in every season under Kah, culminating in a 2021 championship after a 1-0 victory over Forge FC in the CPL final that also earned him 2021 CPL Coach of the Year honors.

Kah became the head coach of North Texas SC of USL Division III for one season in 2022 where the team would lose in the first round of the playoffs.

Charlotte FC would hire Kah as an assistant following the team’s inaugural 2022 season. In Kah’s two seasons on the coaching staff, Charlotte FC lost in the first round of the playoffs. In the 2023 season, Charlotte FC also made it to the round of 16 in the U.S. Open Cup where they would lose to Birmingham Legion FC of the USL Division II, 1-0.

The Phoenix Rising hope Kah can regain his 2021 award winning form and bring the club back to the USL championship again after their 2023 title run.
