Hurley unsure what’s next after ASU’s record loss to Houston

PHOENIX –Arizona State men’s basketball 80-65 loss to No. 5 Houston was historic for all the wrong reasons. Tuesday’s defeat was ASU’s seventh straight loss at Desert Financial Arena, the second-longest home losing streak since the venue opened in 1974. The Sun Devils are on a six-game losing streak and losers of 12 of their past 14 games, leaving head coach Bobby Hurley loss for words.

Hurley has ASU winless in February, and with a tough final two February games against Kansas State and BYU, that might stay true. The last time the program went a calendar month without a win was during the 2006-2007 season when the Sun Devils lost 15 games and eight home games in a row.

2025 is Hurley’s tenth year at the helm, and it might be his last, with the worst midseason collapse of his tenure. His postgame presser after the Houston loss showed a defeated Hurley stuck searching for answers to save the sinking ship. However, as the program’s captain, Hurley will go down for ASU’s shortcomings.

He is second in ASU coaching history in wins (167) and NCAA tournament appearances (3). Hurley’s fiery personality made him a polarizing figure among Sun Devils fans. Regardless, he has undoubtedly made a positive impact in Tempe. Hurley is lost about what’s next for ASU in the next couple of weeks and likely feels unsure about his job security after a historically bad month.

ASU’s final five games will be interesting to see how Hurley and his team respond. Will they go out fighting, especially with a tough stretch of games against highly ranked-conference opponents? Or will the fall from grace continue, putting this year’s team in historically bad company?
