Can Cam Skattebo give Arizona State one last fight for Peach Bowl comeback victory?

Everyone gets their welcome to the SEC moment when taking on the nation’s toughest conference’s best teams, and Arizona State senior running back Cam Skattebo is getting his in the Chick-fil-a Peach Bowl against Texas.

Skattebo’s 23 carries for 110 yards heading into the fourth quarter doesn’t tell the full story.

If you want to know how tough it is for the All-American running back, look to the sideline as the Sun Devils’ lead-man puking and gasping for water headed into the game’s final period; watch the hard hits in the back field that he had been taking from the moment ASU touched the ball; count the multiple third and fourth down stops, including a goal line stand that led to graduate student defensive back Shamari Simmons forced safety on the ensuing play.

Skattebo has not taken a beaten like this all season, and I’d take it as far as even saying ever in his career.

But with one quarter left to play and Texas junior quarterback extending the lead to 24-8 with a rushing touchdown with a little more than 10 minutes to play, he has no choice but to suck it up.

Skattebo has been making claims since the Big 12 Championship as the best running back in the country, and now is the time to show it. He had finally hit his stride, breaking for a 33-yard run, his longest of the day, to help the Sun Devils get in field goal range, but he is visibly depleting. Sophomore running back Kyson Brown is taking more snaps, but that just can’t happen right now.

If he truly believes he was snubbed by Heisman voters, this is where he has to prove it if he doesn’t want to see Arizona State’s historic season come to an end.
