The Diamondbacks dropped the series opener to the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 at Chase Field. Arizona’s high-powered offense was held to just one run, as they failed to get the big hit in the game despite getting a lot of traffic against Freddy Peralta.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!“We created some opportunities, we threw some traffic out there, four walks and six hits,” said Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo on DbacksTV. “We built some innings, we just couldn’t get that big hit. We couldn’t get that space where we have the slug that broke the game open.”
The frustrating part of this game was it wasted a solid outing by Eduardo RodrÃguez. RodrÃguez allowed just two runs in five innings, striking out a season-high seven batters. However, it was one pitch he’d like to have back that made the difference. With a runner on and two outs, he left a two-strike fastball over the heart of the plate to Rhys Hoskins, who blasted a long home run down the left field line to give the Brewers the lead.
Early on, it looked like the Diamondbacks would put up a crooked number against Peralta. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out in the first. Pavin Smith lifted a fly ball to medium-deep center to score Corbin Carroll from third. That was the only run for the night, despite ample opportunities against the Brewers starter. Arizona finished 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base.
The missed opportunities came back to bite them, despite knocking out Peralta after five innings. The Brewers’ vaunted bullpen, sporting the second-lowest ERA in the 2024 season (3.14), shut down the Diamondbacks lineup for four innings. Arizona managed only one baserunner, a Christian Walker walk in the eighth, which was erased by a double play.
With the out-of-town scores going against the Diamondbacks, they drop to the second Wild Card spot and their magic number to clinch a postseason spot remains at 14 with 15 games left.
