It may not seem like it, given that the Diamondbacks have won their last six games and scored more runs than any other team in baseball this season, but the D-backs are currently without their three best infielders: Christian Walker, Gabriel Moreno, and Ketel Marte.

Ahead of the D-backs’ series opener against the New York Mets on Tuesday, manager Torey Lovullo provided some positive injury updates.

Starting with Christian Walker, who has been sidelined since before the trade deadline with an oblique injury, Lovullo confirmed that he is now taking batting practice and could even participate in controlled environment games this weekend. While there’s no exact return date, Lovullo anticipates Walker will likely not be back until after September 1st.

Then there’s Ketel Marte, who has been out for a shorter period but whose absence is arguably more impactful, as he was in the thick of the National League MVP race before heading to the IL with an ankle injury. Marte recently shared a video of himself taking batting practice in a cage on Instagram. According to Lovullo, Marte is now out of the treatment phase.

Gabriel Moreno is in a similar situation to Marte. As of August 12th, Lovullo remains optimistic that Moreno will return by the end of the season, though he still has at least a couple of weeks before he’s fully ready. Moreno also took batting practice in a cage on Tuesday.

Stay tuned for further updates.
