Former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Colt McCoy is retiring from the NFL after 14 seasons.

“I love football,” McCoy said in the video. “It’s a beautiful sport. It’s a great game, and it’s taught me so much about my makeup, my DNA, my competitive spirit. I’m very, very, very appreciative of it. I hate that that I can’t play anymore, but I’m also grateful for what the good Lord allowed me to do and and how long I got to play.
“As a kid growing up in West Texas, we all have dreams, but pushing myself and and working and being fortunate to be around great, great people and coaches and teammates. It was a dream come true.”

McCoy spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the Cardinals as a backup to Kyler Murray and has not played for a team since. He appeared in 12 games with Arizona, completing 164-of-231 pass attempts for 1,520 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. In the video, McCoy said he can’t play football anymore because of an elbow injury that led him to being cut before the Cardinals’ 2023 season.
The former Texas star and two-time finalist for the Heisman Trophy was drafted by the Cleveland Browsn in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft after leading the Longhorns to the BCS National Championship game and winning the Big 12 title with a 12-0 record his last collegiate season. McCoy had to watch the championship from the sidelines after suffering an injury less than four minutes into the game, as Alabama defeated Texas 37-21.
Before the Cardinals, McCoy spent his first three seasons with the Browns (2010-2012), one with the San Francisco 49ers (2013), five with the Washington Commanders (2014-19) and one with the New York Giants (2020).
McCoy accumulated 7,975 passing yards, 34 touchdowns and 32 interceptions in 56 career NFL games (36 starts).
