Speaking on MLB Network’s High Heat program, Lovullo disclosed that Moreno is traveling back to Arizona to undergo MRIs. Since he has not yet received a full checkup from the team’s doctors, the extent of the injury remains unknown.

Lovullo also announced on MLB Network that Adrian Del Castillo will be called up to make his major league debut. Del Castillo, recently named to the Minor League Prospects Team of the Week representing the Reno Aces, has recorded hits in 10 of his last 11 games. On April 3rd, against the Sacramento River Cats, he hit a three-run home run, contributing to the Aces’ 6-1 victory. This was one of three home runs he hit last week, bringing his season total to 24. He is currently ranked as the Diamondbacks’ No. 28 prospect.

Del Castillo was named Minor League Player of the Month in May and leads the entire Pacific Coast League in hits, runs, doubles, SLG, and OPS.

Lovullo stated, “[Moreno] is on the way back to Arizona as we speak, right now to get an MRI and be evaluated by our doctors. He is going to be put on the IL… we’re going to have Del Castillo come up from Triple-A.”

The Diamondbacks won their series opener against the Guardians thanks to another go-ahead two-run home run by Joc Pederson. They will now look to secure their 7th straight series win with Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound. The Diamondbacks have not yet made the official roster move to make room for Rodriguez, which will likely come hours before his start, corresponding with the move to place Moreno on the IL and promote Del Castillo to the majors.

It has not been disclosed whether the Diamondbacks will start Jose Herrera, who has played in 17 games this season backing up Moreno, or Del Castillo in his debut.

Stay tuned for further updates.
