The nightmare season for Diamondbacks’ top prospect Jordan Lawlar continues. Manager Torey Lovullo told reporters, including Jack Sommers of Inside the Diamondbacks, that Lawlar reinjured his hamstring in his rehab assignment with the complex league and will miss another 6-8 weeks. The injury occurred when he tried to push it on a first to third on a single.

It’s been a tough year for the Diamondbacks top prospect. He debuted with Arizona at the tail-end of the 2023 season, being a part of their postseason run as their seldom-used backup at shortstop. Lawlar got two at-bats in the postseason but was looking to spend much of the 2024 season in Triple-A when Lovullo announced Geraldo Perdomo as the everyday shortstop at the start of Spring Training.
After getting sent down to the minors, Lawlar ruptured the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb in defensive drills and missed more than two months with surgery and rehab. He returned to the Reno Aces on June 11 and injured his left hamstring running the bases on a triple on June 15. He had started his rehab assignment with the Diamondbacks’ complex league affiliate on July 6.
In Lawlar’s absence, Blaze Alexander and Kevin Newman got opportunities at the major league level. Newman has since entrenched himself as the team’s backup shortstop behind Perdomo and is expanding into more of a utility infielder role.
With the hamstring injury pushing his return another 6-8 weeks, Lawlar’s 2024 season is pretty much all but over as he’ll only see a handful of meaningful games in the season. There’s a chance the team could try to get him some reps in the Arizona Fall League if the hamstring responds well, but it’s looking like a lost season for their top prospect.
