The Diamondbacks have officially activated shortstop Geraldo Perdomo from the 10-day injured list. John Gambadoro, co-host of the Burns and Gambo Show on Arizona Sports Radio, reported that Perdomo would be activated ahead of the upcoming series against the Los Angeles Angels.

Nine weeks later he’s back and in the starting lineup, batting ninth and playing shortstop. To make room for him on the roster, the Diamondbacks sent down Pavin Smith to Triple-A Reno.

With Perdomo back in the lineup, that adds a significant on-base presence at the bottom of the Diamondbacks lineup. His ability to grind out at-bats from the nine spot, draw walks, and set the table for the top of the order is a significant asset to the lineup and a big part of their offense. Kevin Newman and Blaze Alexander successfully held down the fort at the position in Perdomo’s absence.
Smith ended up being the odd man out in the Diamondbacks roster crunch despite a solid showing at the plate as a fifth outfielder, backup first baseman, and pinch-hitter. The additional roster crunch and playing time decision when Alek Thomas comes off the injured list also likely sparked this roster move. His ability to provide consistent at-bats off the bench was critical in some of their recent wins. While on an optional assignment, Smith must spend 10 days with Triple-A Reno before he is eligible recalled to the active roster except to replace an injured player.
The Diamondbacks sit just a game back in a very bizarre National League Wild Card race. Two of the three spots are currently held by teams with a sub-.500 record and 13 of 15 National League teams are within 3.5 games of a playoff spot, which could create problems at the trade deadline. However, the hope is Arizona can pull away from the pack with a healthier roster.
