For the first 20,000 fans who will enter Chase Field and watch the D’Backs face the St. Louis Cardinals tonight, they will receive commemorative Alek Thomas t-shirts for his clutch home run in Game 4 of the 2023 NLCS against the Philadelphia Phillies last October.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Arizona was trailing 5-3 with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on second base and had one out.

Stepping into the batter’s box against Craig Kimbrel, Thomas had the chance to tie the ballgame as Arizona was down 2-1 in the series.

After being on a full count, Thomas crushed Kimbrel’s fastball to right field and homered into the pool, tying the game 5-5. A few batters later, Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno hit a game-winning, RBI single to score Ketel Marte as Arizona eventually won 6-5.

“Coming out big in that moment and the history of it and everything, it is pretty sweet,” Thomas said during a media availability. “Just a really special moment, I love this feeling, I love seeing the fans getting really excited and getting this place bumping.”

That crucial home run spurred Arizona to come back and win in the series 4-3, punching their ticket to the World Series against the Texas Rangers.

“Alek Thomas had an amazing moment and he has a lot to be proud of,” D’Backs manager Torey Lovullo said after Game 4 of the NLCS.

Thomas became just the fourth-youngest player to hit a playoff home run after as a pinch hitter. Yogi Berra, Gavin Lux and Oscar Taveras were younger than Thomas.

As a result of the homer, fans celebrated back then and still talk about how important this home run was to their journey last year.

Here is some of what the D’Backs faithful had to say:

The first pitch between the Diamondbacks and Cardinals is at 6:40 p.m. PT.
