Montgomery was one of the last “big names” remaining on the free-agent starting pitcher board.
The South Carolina native was a fourth-round (122nd overall) selection by the New York Yankees in the 2014 MLB Draft. He has played seven seasons in the MLB with the Yankees (2017-22), St. Louis Cardinals (2022-23) and Texas Rangers (2023).
In 141 games (140 starts), Montgomery has totaled a 38-34 record, 3.68 ERA and 705 strikeouts in 755.0 innings.
On July 30 last year, the Cardinals traded Montgomery to the Rangers who eventually won the 2023 World Series over the Diamondbacks. He started all 11 games he appeared in, posted a 4-2 record, 2.79 ERA and 58 strikeouts for Texas.
With RodrÃguez suffering a lat strain and opening the season on the injured list, this led Arizona to execute the addition of Mongomery. Like Montgomery, RodrÃguez was a free agent acquisition after signing a four-year, $80 million contract.
