Arizona State Outclassed By Colorado, 81-68

The Arizona State Sun Devils were at home against the fifth ranked Colorado Buffaloes. ASU came into this game on a two game losing streak after losses to Santa Clara and Utah. Colorado came into this game on a six game win streak. Was ASU able to end Colorado’s win streak?

First Quarter

The game started off with runs from each team. Colorado got out to a 9-0 run to start the game then ASU responded with a 6-0 run of their own.

The teams would go back and forth exchanging baskets for the next several minutes. Colorado was up 23-18 with 1:14 left he quarter after Aaronette Vonleh made a lay-up. Vonleh was hurt on the play and had to be helped off of the court.

The quarter ended with Colorado up 25-18.Vonleh led the Buffaloes with 14 points on 7/9 shooting from the floor.

The leading scorer for the Sun Devils was Jayln Brown who had 12 points on 4/8 from the floor and 1/2 from three point range.

Second Quarter

The second quarter started with Colorado extending their lead behind the play of Quay Miller. Colorado was up 29-20 with 7:25 left and Vonleh checked back into the game.

The defensive intensity was raised for Colorado and ASU had a very hard time adjusting to it. The Buffaloes lead continued to expand. They were up 38-20 with five minutes left in the quarter.

The Sun Devils had no answer for the avalanche of points by Colorado. The Buffaloes were up 43-20 with 3:59 left in the quarter after a three pointer from Maddie Nolan.

The rest of the quarter was not good for the Sun Devils as the lead continued to expand for Colorado. The Buffaloes outscored ASU, 25-7, in the second quarter. Colorado went into halftime up, 50-25.

Stats of the Half

The leading scorer for Colorado was Vonleh with 18 points on a very efficient 9/12 from the floor. Nolan was also big for the Buffaloes with 11 points, making three of her five, three point attempts.

ASU was led by Brown who had 16 points, no other player had more than five points.

Colorado shot 54% from the floor while holding ASU to 26% shooting. The Buffaloes shot 36% from behind the three point line compared to 14% for the Sun Devils.

Third Quarter

ASU started off the third quarter in a strong way, cutting the Colorado’s lead to 20. The Buffaloes were up 55-35 with 4:55 left in the quarter.

The Sun Devils were able to cut the lead behind the scoring of Jalyn Brown and Isadora Sousa. Sousa hit two bank shot three pointers in the quarter.

Arizona State and Colorado would exchange baskets throughout the rest of the quarter. Colorado was up 71-49 at the end of the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter

The quarter started like the third ended with the teams exchanging baskets. Colorado played their bench unit for most of the quarter and ASU cut the lead during that time but Colorado was never in danger of losing.

The Buffaloes won the game, 81-68.

Colorado is now 13-1 and 3-0 in conference play. ASU fell to 8-7 and 0-3 in the Pac-12.

Stats of the Game

Colorado was led by Aaronette Vonleh who ended the game with 20 points. She shot 10/15 from the floor. The Buffaloes second leading scorer was Frida Formann who had 13 points.

ASU was led by Jayln Brown who scored a career high 35 points on 11/23 shooting from the floor, 2/7 from three point range, and 11/12 from the free throw line.

Up Next

ASU will be on the road at Oregon on January 12th while Colorado will host California on that same day.
