Kerr, now one of the most decorated coaches in NBA history with the Golden State Warriors and Curry, was the general manager of the Phoenix Suns from 2007-10. Curry, now the greatest shooter in NBA history, was drafted in 2009. Kerr tried to make a move on draft night for him to come to the Suns.

“We were looking at Steph and seeing the next version (of Steve Nash),” Kerr said. “They were so alike in so many ways. We had watched Steve just become the two-time MVP. All of the concerns that most of the people in the league had about Steph in terms of size and defense and athleticism, we saw everything we needed to see. Steve had done so much in the league, and we thought he could be very similar.

“We tried to trade for him, and we thought we had a deal the night before the draft. It wasn’t completed, but it was basically a discussion over the phone that we thought was done. So, when he fell to (the No. 7 pick), our draft room erupted because we thought the deal was in place and Steph was going to be a Phoenix Sun, and it didn’t happen, it fell through.”

Kerr added that Curry ended up being a big part of the appeal of accepting the Warriors’ head coaching job.

There are plenty of big “if” moments throughout the course of basketball, and several even surrounding rumors of Curry to other teams like the Bucks, but this one would have been a huge splash for the Suns.

It’s ironic now that Curry and Kerr are one of the greatest player-coach duos in NBA history.
