NBA Early Season Impressions: Southwest Division

The NBA season is now two weeks in and there are so many story lines throughout the league. Here are my early season impressions of the southwest division.

Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks may be the most shocking team of the first two weeks. They are currently 6-1 behind the play of their offense. Dallas having the ability to score points is not shocking, the fact that they are getting stops is the surprising part. They are ranked 17th on defense, giving up 114 points per game. If the Mavericks continue to play defense at an average level along with their excellent offense, they may be the surprise contender in the western conference.

New Orleans Pelicans

The New Orleans Pelicans are 4-3 and are already dealing with injuries. This is the same story, new season for the Pelicans. I hope they are able to stay healthy but its started off bad as C.J. McCollum is set to miss significant time with a lung issue. Brandon Ingram has missed three games with right knee soreness. The Pelicans came into the season with rotation players Trey Murphy and Jose Alvarado already out. At least Zion Williamson has been healthy so far. Finger crossed that this team can be mostly healthy for the rest of the season. If so, they can make some real noise in the western conference.

Houston Rockets

The Houston Rockets started off the season with three straight losses and are now 3-3. In the last three games they have defeated the Charlotte Hornets and Sacramento Kings twice. The Kings were missing their All-Star point guard De’Aaron Fox. We have to wait and see if this win streak was just a product of the schedule but I love what I am seeing from this team. They are defending at a very high level only giving up 108 points per game which is seventh best in the NBA. They are also very balanced on offense with five players averaging at least 14 points per game. One of my bold predictions coming into the season was that the Rockets would be a surprise play-in team. I feel good about that prediction.

San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are on the national radar for the first time in a few years because they drafted Victor Wembanyama with the number one overall pick in this year’s draft. They are a young team that will have ups and downs. Some of those downs will be really bad like giving up 152 points to the Indiana Pacers. The big thing for the Spurs is the development of Wembanyama who is already living up to the hype. He is averaging 19.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game while doing things that leave fans’ minds blown on a nightly basis. Spurs’ fans have so much to look forward with this phenom on the team.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies have been absolutely horrible so far this season and I am not surprised at all. One of my bold predictions coming into the season was that the Grizzlies would miss the playoffs. I am feeling really good about that prediction as they are currently 1-6 and still have 18 more games without Ja Morant as he continues to serve his suspension. Morant won’t be able to save their season as they will fall too far behind the contenders in the western conference.
