Brandon Pfaadt vs. Ranger Suarez in Game 7 of the NLCS

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Brandon Pfaadt (32) throws a pitch against the Philadelphia Phillies during the sixth inning in game three of the NLCS of the 2023 MLB playoffs at Chase Field in Phoenix on Oct. 19, 2023.

If you had told anyone at the beginning of the season that Brandon Pfaadt would be pitching in Game 7 of the NLCS, hoping to send the Diamondbacks to the World Series, they probably would have thought you were crazy.

However, that is exactly the case.

Pfaadt, who was drafted in the 5th round of the 2020 draft by Arizona, made his major league debut on May 3rd.

In this start, at the age of 24 years old, Pfaadt allowed seven earned runs on nine hits in just 4.2 innings of work.

This trend then continued on for just about the entire year.

Pfaadt’s ERA did not dip below 7.00 until August 13th. Through his first 10 starts of the season, Brandon held one of the highest ERAs in the entire MLB.

To make matters worse, the rookie started his career 0-6, he did not pick up his first career win until August 25th.

Because of this, Pfaadt saw time in the minor leagues.

But, as the season continued and only months remained, the Diamondbacks found themselves with few other options.

Which, so far this postseason, has served them quite well.

As the third man in their rotation, Pfaadt has already made three postseason starts.

The Diamondbacks have won all three games that the rookie has started.

In his last two appearances, Pfaadt has combined for 10 shutout innings. More specifically, he struck out nine Phillies batters in Game 3 of the NLCS to help get the Diamondbacks into the win column.

Now, he will face the Phillies for a second time and could potentially send his team to the World Series.

The first pitch for Game 7 is set for 5:07 p.m. Arizona time.
