The Diamondbacks Magic Runs Out as They Get Destroyed in Game 5

The Diamondbacks came back to win two games in a row. They could not muster a third as the Phillies pitching comes alive. They fell 6-1 and now must win two in Philly to advance to the World Series.

Zac Gallen entered the game knowing he had to avoid his fastball, but his lack of control with secondary pitches caused the Phillies to reach base early. Schwarber hit an infield single, then Bryce Harper hit a fastball into center, Stott singled Schwarber home on a curveball, and it was 1-0.

Then another bad defensive play gave the Phillies a run. Moreno tried to throw Stott out at second as Bryce Harper ran home. Ketel Marte threw the ball home, but it was wide of Moreno, who reached right into Bryce Harper’s running path. Harper tried to touch the plate and ran right into the head of Gabriel Moreno. Moreno was okay but did not control the ball, and Harper scored. It was 2-0 through one.

From this point on, it was a pitching duel, as Zack Wheeler shut down the D-backs again, and Gallen picked it up and retired 11 straight batters.

That duel lasted until the sixth inning when Zac Gallen hung two pitches for Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. Both were sent over 440 feet, and the D-backs now were down 4-0. Right after the Dbacks got base traffic, Christian Walker doubled, but no one could get him in, and Zac Gallen’s night was done.

The Phillies rolled out Wheeler again in the 7th, and he gave up a leadoff homer to last night’s hero Alek Thomas, and the score was now 4-1. The D-backs had life.

Until they didn’t, it only took about 10 minutes to end this game as JT Realmuto hit a Luis Frias ball to the seats for a two-run homer to blow this one open. 6-1 Phillies.

The Diamondbacks did threaten in the ninth but could not do anything spectacular, except that Ketel Marte kept his postseason-hitting streak alive with a leadoff single in the eighth.

The Diamondbacks lost 6-1 and now must return to the dreaded Citizen’s Bank Park and win both. Merrill Kelly will be on the mound in Game 6.
