Zac Gallen Dominates Chicago in Shutout Victory

© Matt Marton-USA TODAY Sports

Todays 1-0 victory was all about Zac Gallen, Gallen threw a complete game shutout allowing just three hits with 9 strikeouts. After back to back shaky starts, this has to be huge momentum for Gallen. This was Gallen’s first career complete game shutout, and the second complete game of his career. Gallen threw 110 pitches in the ball game.

Over Gallen’s last two games, he was knocked around a little bit. Gallen went from first in Cy Young voting to fourth over the time. A big Zac Gallen outing was just what the Diamondbacks needed. Especially in this series, too. With the Diamondbacks being in Chicago to play the Cubs, who is also one of Arizona’s Wildcard competitors. Arizona moves their record to 74-68 with the win, and takes a 1 game lead over the Miami Marlins & Cincinnati Reds for the third Wildcard spot.

Offensively there was not a whole lot going on for the Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks struck out a total of 15 times in the ball game. Chicago also had their stuff today, the Cubs threw five pitchers throughout the ball game, allowing just one run. Jameson Taillon also threw well, going six innings for the Cubs striking out nine batters allowing just one hit and one walk.

Arizona had just four hits in the ball game coming from three batters. Corbin Carroll hit what would eventually become the winning run for the Diamondbacks in the eighth inning, scoring Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Carroll was the only Diamondback with more than one hit, singling twice in the ball game.

A challenged catch makes the difference

Seiya Suzuki from the Cubs made what seemed to be an inning ending sliding catch. Arizona successfully challenged the catch, scoring one run and placing two base runners at the corners.

Zac Gallen moves his record to 15-7 on the year after the win, with his ERA moving down to 3.31. The Diamondbacks and Cubs will go at it for game three in Chicago, tomorrow at 11:20 am PST.
