Frank Vogel had a lot to say during his introductory press conference but no quote controlled the headlines more than his quote regarding Deandre Ayton.

"I think he can be one of the best centers in the league. … There are still areas that he can grow offensively, but I'm intent on really connecting with him and restoring him to an All-Star level player."

Deandre Ayton has averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds per game as a member of the Phoenix Suns. There has been trade speculation surrounding him over the course of the offseason and this quote from Vogel may be a high endorsement that Ayton is sticking around.
In the press conference as well, Vogel talked about rim protection being a key ingredient to how his defenses have always been top of the league. In the case of Ayton, Vogel believes his system is the best in the NBA at accentuating quality rim protectors to be the focal point of his defense.
“I think it starts with the big fella,” says Vogel. “I’ve always had elite rim prtoectors and you can get the job done you know without that but when you have a guy like that in front of the basket deterring everything that comes to the rim you know you just get stronger at everything… I have a scheme that I believe is the best in the league at tailoring those strengths into the group.”
Only time will tell to see if Ayton is still a part of the Suns’ plans. But if anything, Vogel’s remarks are an encouraging sign for the young Center.
